Domain monitoring vs brand protection

Domain monitoring watches registrations. Brand protection has to catch the live shop.

Teams buy a domain monitoring service and wonder why the fake shop is still live. Registrations are the cheap signal. Brand protection is classification plus takedown: is this host a parked typo, a phishing login, or a checkout cloning your catalog?

What a domain monitoring service actually does

It watches new registrations that contain your brand or sit close to your hostname: typos, extra words, TLD swaps. You get a list. Sometimes WHOIS. Sometimes a screenshot of a registrar park page.

That list is useful for defensive registration and for counsel who want a paper trail. Most rows never resolve to a shop. The one that does is buried in the same CSV as 200 parked .sbs names.

What a brand protection platform has to add

Live probing: cart, checkout, credential-harvest login, or parked. Evidence: URL, screenshot, registrar/host. A path to file with the registrar and the host or CDN.

Obscuryn is that platform for impersonation sites. Domain registration monitoring is one input. The product is the live host you can act on. We do not seize physical goods or run Amazon seller enforcement.

Typosquat vs phishing domain

A typosquat is a lookalike hostname: yourbrand.co, yourbrnad.com, buyyourbrand.shop. It might be parked, for sale, or hostile. “Typosquat” describes the name. It does not describe the page.

A phishing domain is a host that is collecting credentials or payment data while pretending to be you. It is often also a typosquat. Classify the page: parked typo, live phish, or clone shop.

When domain monitoring is enough

You already own the obvious TLDs, you have counsel watching registrations, and you have never seen a live clone shop. A registration feed plus a quarterly manual check can be enough.

It stops being enough the week buy[brand].shop ranks in ads. That host may have been in last month’s domain-monitoring export as “registered, parked” the day before the kit went live.
